Vulgate Reading Group

This reading group is for students who have finished at least one year of Wheelock’s Latin or a similar curriculum. Students keep their Latin skills fresh while reading unedited passages from the Vulgate translation of the Bible. Translating in a round-table format, the group reviews grammar as necessary and analyzes medieval illustrations of the text. No homework is required for the group, and students practice sight translation with the aid of online dictionaries. This group is especially recommended for high school students and/or adults who have studied Latin in the past and want to keep their reading skills fresh.

Prerequisites

At least one year of Wheelock's Latin (through chapter XX) or similar instruction.

Recommended background

Students with a background in Latin other than Wheelock's are encouraged to know at least the first three noun declensions, all the verb tenses, and both active and passive voices. Knowledge of the subjunctive is not required, though we will discuss it often when encountered in the readings.

The grade for this reading group is pass/fail based on student participation. No textbook is required for this group. A full syllabus will be posted on July 1.
