For several summers we’ve offered courses on a specific dialogue of Plato, and they have been well received and a lot of fun for us to teach. This summer we are offering another dialogue, the Meno. The Meno is one of the most important of the Platonic sequence, containing some challenging ideas about both metaphysical reality (the pre-existence of the soul) and epistemology (how we know what we know — or think we know). We’ll try to dig into the various high points of this well-written and challenging collection of ideas. Familiarity with Greek is welcome but certainly not required: students who want to read the dialogue in Greek on the side should contact DrMcM for the possibility — it can be arranged. The class will be conducted entirely in English, of course.

Prerequisites

None

Recommended background

Some familiarity with Greek history and philosophy general, and with Plato in particular, is always helpful, but is not required; this is as good a place to start as any and better than most.

Teacher's notes:

If there is sufficient interest in going through the dialogue in Greek on the side, DrMcM will be happy to help with that.
