Course Description
Academic Year 2024-2025 • Grade 10 and above • Latin Sequence
Latin V (Latin Literature)
For capable and seasoned students who still retain a sense of fun, this course focuses on the range and variety of Latin lyric poetry through the works of Catullus (humorous, allusive, and changeable) and Horace (often more serious, but equally brilliant). Our goal here is to appreciate the works as poetry on their own, as well as examples of the Latin language, building on the poetical foundations we began to build in Latin IV. Between them the two poets encompass an astounding range of tonality and temperament.
The course follows the College Board’s now-extinct curriculum for AP Latin Literature (Catullus was required; Horace was selected from a list of options). While that AP exam is no longer being offered, its material remains timeless and engaging.

Prerequisites
Latin III or equivalent. This course may be taken either before or after Latin IV, though following the numerical sequence will probably afford the smoothest path.
Recommended background
Latin IV is recommended but not strictly required; some familiarity with other Latin literature is highly encouraged. Western Literature to Dante will prove helpful in providing historical and literary context, but is not required. Contact instructor if you have questions about preparation.

Other information: This is one of the larger (and more expensive) dictionaries available for serious Latinists. Unlike the larger and more recent Oxford Latin Dictionary, its range extends up to about 600 A. D., and so is more useful for those interested in Mediaeval Latin. Definitely not required, though some suitable dictionary is required. This is old enough that it is also available in many forms in addition to the cumbersome volume from Oxford: the Logeion site online offers its material for free and in very good format.

Other information: Emphatically not required, this is probably the most comprehensive Classical Latin dictionary avaiable in English today; it is also the most expensive. Its coverage does not extend much beyond A.D. 200, however, and so it is probably not as useful as Lewis and Short for those who want to pursue later Latin.
